Galleria Borghese Plans €10 Million Expansion in Rome

Rome's Galleria Borghese is moving ahead with plans for a new 3,000-square-meter extension, designed to accommodate more visitors and give the museum additional space for its collection and activities.

The project is estimated to cost €10 million, or about $11.15 million, and is supported by Italy's Ministry of Culture and the municipality of Rome. The museum welcomes around 700,000 visitors each year, while daily entry is currently capped at 2,000 people.

More room for art and visitors

The proposed space could bring artworks currently in storage into public view and provide room for exhibitions, a restaurant, a bookshop and a laboratory. The museum's director, Francesca Cappelletti, has said the existing historic villa must remain untouched, with the new architecture designed to complement its character and the surrounding park.

Engineering firm Proger Spa is organizing the architectural competition. Candidates have until November 13 to register their interest, and an independent jury is expected to select a winning proposal in mid-May 2027.

By pairing expanded visitor facilities with new opportunities to display its collection, the project could help the Galleria Borghese serve a wider public while preserving its historic setting.
