Enhanced Protections for Lebanon's Archaeological Treasures with Blue Shields

Lebanon has placed blue shields at 34 archaeological sites to enhance their protection under international laws, promoting cultural heritage amidst ongoing conflicts.

Enhanced Protections for Lebanon's Archaeological Treasures with Blue Shields

In a significant move to safeguard its rich cultural heritage, Lebanon has installed blue shields at 34 archaeological sites across the country. This initiative, announced by the Lebanese Culture Ministry, aims to ensure these sites are recognized as protected under international laws concerning cultural property during armed conflicts.

Culture Minister Ghassan Salameh emphasized the importance of this action, stating that it aligns with the 1954 Hague Convention, which mandates the protection of cultural heritage--including monuments and artworks--from destruction amid warfare. Salameh highlighted his proactive approach, having reached out to UNESCO Director-General Khaled Anani on the first day of the current conflict to advocate for adherence to the convention.

"These blue shields serve as a clear signal that these sites must be respected," Salameh noted, underlining their role in raising awareness among potential aggressors.

This initiative follows a precedent set in 2014 when UNESCO granted enhanced protection to 34 historic sites after an Israeli airstrike near Baalbek, a site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Salameh pointed out that despite this progress, several cultural landmarks in Lebanon still lack UNESCO's protective status.

Recent developments in the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict have led to damage at various cultural venues throughout Lebanon, including the Al-Bass archaeological site in Tyre and multiple public libraries, with some suffering complete destruction. UNESCO has been actively involved, providing support to Lebanon by sharing the geographic coordinates of significant sites to help mitigate potential damage.

As Lebanon continues to navigate these challenging times, the installation of blue shields represents a hopeful step towards preserving its cultural identity and heritage for future generations.
