British artist Sacha Jafri's monumental canvas The Journey of Humanity, sold in Dubai in 2021 for £45 million ($62 million), was presented as a landmark charity sale for children's causes. The proceeds were meant to support UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Global Gift Foundation through Dubai Cares.
More than five years later, the distribution of those funds remains unresolved. According to the Times, UNICEF says it has not received any money so far, while UNESCO says it received $1.9 million from Dubai Cares in 2022, without confirmation that the donation came directly from the auction.
The sale also led to a legal dispute involving Dubai Cares and buyer André Abdoune, who was expected to complete payment for the artwork. A court later dismissed claims that Jafri had unlawfully taken the painting, while Abdoune was reportedly ordered to pay the amount owed.
Jafri has said his role was limited to creating the work and offering it for charity in good faith. Painted during the pandemic, the 17,000-square-foot piece became known for its scale and for the attention it drew from collectors and philanthropists alike.
