In a significant move, Clarifai, an AI platform, has removed 3 million photos sourced from OkCupid, which were originally utilized to enhance its facial recognition technology. This decision follows scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding the appropriateness of the data sharing.

The FTC's investigation revealed that back in 2014, Clarifai sought access to user-uploaded images from OkCupid, a request that was facilitated by OkCupid's executives who had invested in Clarifai. These images, along with various demographic and location details, were shared, although such actions were against OkCupid's privacy policies.

Matthew Zeiler, founder and CEO of Clarifai, expressed in an email to OkCupid co-founder Maxwell Krohn his excitement about the potential data, stating, "We're collecting data now and just realized that OKCupid must have a HUGE amount of awesome data for this." This exchange highlights the proactive approach taken by Clarifai to enhance its AI capabilities.

Although the events in question occurred over a decade ago, the FTC only launched its investigation in 2019, prompted by a New York Times article that discussed Clarifai's use of OkCupid images to develop an AI tool capable of estimating attributes such as age, sex, and race based on facial features.

Recently, the FTC and OkCupid, which operates under Match Group, reached a settlement regarding the allegations. While neither OkCupid nor Match Group admitted to wrongdoing, Clarifai's acknowledgment of deleting the data suggests that the access to these photos was indeed granted. The FTC also alleged that since 2014, Match Group and OkCupid had deliberately concealed their actions and obstructed the investigation.

In light of this settlement, OkCupid and Match Group are now permanently restricted from misrepresenting their data collection practices or aiding others in similar misrepresentation. This measure aims to enhance transparency and safeguard user privacy in the digital landscape.

As technology continues to evolve, the implications of such developments underscore the importance of ethical data practices. The proactive steps taken by Clarifai may set a precedent for other tech companies, emphasizing the need for responsible data usage and the protection of user privacy in AI advancements.
