Breakthrough Research Unveils Ubiquitous Silicone Pollutant in the Atmosphere

New research uncovers the widespread presence of methylsiloxanes, a silicone pollutant linked to vehicle emissions, raising health and environmental concerns globally.

Breakthrough Research Unveils Ubiquitous Silicone Pollutant in the Atmosphere

In a groundbreaking study led by researchers from Utrecht University and the University of Groningen, findings published in the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics reveal the widespread presence of methylsiloxanes, a class of silicone compounds often overlooked in environmental discussions.

Widespread Presence of Methylsiloxanes

While pollutants like PFAS and microplastics have garnered significant attention, methylsiloxanes--used primarily as lubricants--have been largely neglected. Initially believed to originate mainly from personal care products and industrial sources, recent findings indicate that larger molecular forms of these compounds are released from vehicles and ships, dispersing widely across various environments.

The research highlights that these larger methylsiloxanes are not confined to urban areas; they have been detected in rural, coastal, and forest settings, indicating their pervasive presence in the atmosphere. "Our results suggest that the atmospheric concentrations of methylsiloxanes are significantly higher than previously thought," states Rupert Holzinger, an associate professor at Utrecht University and co-supervisor of the study.

These compounds constitute approximately 2 to 4.3 percent of the total mass of organic aerosols in the atmosphere, making them among the most prevalent synthetic substances found in airborne particles, in stark contrast to the much lower concentrations of PFAS.

Sources of Pollution

Methylsiloxanes, when added to lubricants, serve to enhance performance. However, during engine operation, some of these compounds inevitably enter the combustion chamber. Due to their heat-resistant properties, they survive combustion and are released into the atmosphere via exhaust.

The highest concentrations of methylsiloxanes were observed in urban settings, with São Paulo, Brazil, recording levels of 98 nanograms per cubic meter. In contrast, forest locations like Rugsteliskis, Lithuania, exhibited much lower levels, around 0.9 nanograms per cubic meter.

Air samples from various locations, including Cabauw in the Netherlands, revealed concentrations of 2 nanograms per cubic meter, showcasing the global reach of this pollutant.

Potential Health and Environmental Implications

The ubiquitous nature of methylsiloxanes raises concerns about continuous inhalation by humans, with researchers unsure of the long-term health implications. Holzinger emphasizes the need for urgent evaluation, noting that daily exposure to methylsiloxanes may surpass that of other synthetic compounds.

Moreover, these compounds could significantly influence climate dynamics by altering aerosol properties, which are crucial for cloud formation and atmospheric behavior. Changes in aerosol surface tension and ice nucleation processes could have far-reaching impacts on weather patterns.

Link to Vehicle Emissions

The study suggests that over half of the detected methylsiloxane particles likely originate from traffic emissions, particularly from lubricants like engine oil. The dispersion patterns of these compounds closely resemble those of long-chain hydrocarbons, indicating a shared source. Unlike hydrocarbons, which diminish in concentration over distance, methylsiloxanes demonstrate remarkable stability, allowing them to travel significant distances in the atmosphere.
