Powerhouse Parramatta, an exciting new cultural center set to open in late 2026 in Parramatta, west of Sydney, Australia, will feature a striking sculpture by renowned British-Indian artist Bharti Kher. This monumental installation, titled Tree of Life, will greet visitors at the entrance, marking a significant addition to the cultural landscape.
The Tree of Life sculpture consists of four stacked heads crafted from bronze and clay, representing a continuation of Kher's "Intermediaries" series, which she initiated in 2016. This series explores the transformation of found ritual objects into hybrid forms, blending various cultural narratives. Kher's previous public art projects include the 18-foot-tall bronze figure Ancestor, displayed in Central Park, and The Intermediary Family at Harvard Business School.
In an interview, Kher shared that the inspiration for the "Intermediaries" series arose when she received a collection of broken clay figurines in her studio in Delhi. As she repaired these pieces, the series evolved, symbolizing a rich tapestry of familial connections, cultural complexity, and the nuances of diasporic identity.
Kher described Powerhouse Parramatta as "a modern-day cultural hub for Sydneysiders of all backgrounds," emphasizing its role in fostering community engagement through art. The new center will serve as the flagship site of the Powerhouse consortium, which includes several museums across Sydney.
The architectural design of Powerhouse Parramatta features two adjacent buildings with a distinctive white steel exoskeleton, housing art galleries, a theater, artist studios, and a rooftop garden, creating a vibrant space for creativity and cultural exchange.
This ambitious project not only highlights Kher's artistic vision but also signifies a broader commitment to enriching the cultural fabric of the region. As Powerhouse Parramatta prepares to open its doors, it promises to be a transformative space for art enthusiasts and the local community alike, paving the way for future cultural innovations.
