Apple's latest health update is not limited to the newest smartwatch models. The company's expanded Health app and several fitness tools are designed to work across a wider device range, while a few premium features remain tied to the newest hardware.
What requires the newest Apple Watch
Apple says its most advanced heart-rate sensing system is reserved for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. These models include a new sensor and the S11 chip, which power more frequent heart-rate and HRV measurements throughout the day. That means the new Readiness score and overnight Recovery HRV insights depend on those watches.
What needs a newer iPhone
The redesigned Health app itself is tied to an Apple Intelligence-ready device. According to Apple, that includes the iPhone 15 Pro and all iPhone 16 models and later. Inside the app, users can expect clearer trend summaries, organized insights, and next-step suggestions generated from their health data.
Features that work with more devices
Apple's on-demand VO2max test is more flexible. It only requires a heart-rate sensor, which can come from an Apple Watch, AirPods Pro 3, or a compatible third-party wearable. That opens the door for devices from brands such as Fitbit, Whoop, and Garmin to participate if they can broadcast heart-rate data.
The upgraded Workout Buddy also expands access. It works on Apple Watch Series 9 and newer, Ultra 2 and later, and the Apple Watch SE 3. With internet access through cellular or Wi‑Fi, the feature can offer workout motivation directly from the wrist without relying on a phone.
Apple's approach signals a more connected health ecosystem, where software intelligence and wearable sensors work together to make everyday wellness tracking more adaptive and accessible.
