Android Photos Could Soon Back Up Automatically to Windows PCs

Google is preparing automatic Quick Share backups from Android to Windows PCs, allowing users to save photos and videos locally without relying on cloud storage or a subscription.

Android Photos Could Soon Back Up Automatically to Windows PCs

Android users may soon be able to save phone photos and videos automatically to a nearby Windows PC using Quick Share. The option appears in the release notes for Google Play services version 26.43, with availability expected to roll out gradually.

Local backups, without a cloud subscription

Once the feature reaches a device, users can turn on automatic backups in the Quick Share for Windows app and choose what media to transfer and where to store it. The Android phone and PC must be close to each other and signed in to the same Google Account. Transfers then happen wirelessly in the background.

Because copies are saved on the computer, the feature can reduce reliance on cloud storage and remove the need to remember to transfer files manually. It does not require a separate cloud subscription, though available backup space will depend on the PC's storage capacity.

Google's notes do not specify which devices will support the feature, so compatibility details may become clearer as the rollout progresses. Easier local backups could give users a more seamless way to protect everyday media while keeping more control over where it is stored.
