X Increases API Link Posting Costs

X social media platform raises API link posting fees, impacting how news outlets share content and potentially altering engagement strategies.

X Increases API Link Posting Costs

Social media platform X has recently raised the costs associated with posting links through its API, a move aimed at reducing spam and other forms of misuse. The new pricing structure sees the cost per link increase from $0.01 to $0.20.

Last week, the X developer account announced these changes, highlighting two significant adjustments: the aforementioned rise in link posting fees and an increase in the general posting cost, which has now risen from $0.01 to $0.15 per post.

The intention behind these changes is to promote healthier developer practices and minimize misuse of the platform. The developers stated, "More great features & updates coming very soon."

This price hike may deter many media outlets from sharing links. For example, Techmeme, a tech news aggregator, has opted to stop including links in its posts on X. Instead, their posts now direct users to visit "Techmeme dot com for the link and full context!"

Techmeme cited the price increase as a key reason for this decision, while also referencing a Nieman Lab study indicating that including links in posts on X could lead to decreased audience engagement. As a result, Techmeme has chosen to omit links, at least for the time being, although they may consider reintroducing them in the future.

X's head of product, Nikita Bier, contested the findings of the Nieman Lab study, arguing that the accounts analyzed were primarily those that posted links without providing additional context. He also emphasized that there is no mechanism in place that reduces the visibility of posts containing links.

Bier suggested that Techmeme could enhance its posts by including screenshots of audience reactions alongside the links to improve engagement. He stated, "To succeed with links, the linked content must bleed into the post."

In light of the API price changes, Techmeme's founder, Gabe Rivera, expressed concerns that news organizations would now face significant costs to share links, potentially forcing them to pay hundreds of dollars monthly or resort to manual posting.

The ongoing discussion about X's impact on link visibility is not a new phenomenon. Previously, the platform attempted to limit the visibility of posts with links by altering how headlines appeared in link previews, although this decision was reversed after a brief period.

As X continues to evolve its pricing and policies, the implications for content sharing and engagement on the platform will be closely monitored, potentially reshaping how information is disseminated in the digital landscape.
