X and World Federation of Advertisers End Legal Dispute

X and the World Federation of Advertisers settle a long-running dispute, signaling a new phase for brand safety, platform policy, and digital advertising standards.

X and World Federation of Advertisers End Legal Dispute

X has reached an agreement with the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), closing a multiyear legal dispute that centered on brand-safety concerns and ad spending on the platform.

The case began after X alleged that advertisers and industry groups coordinated a boycott following Elon Musk's 2022 takeover of the social network. The company argued that advertising decisions were influenced by guidelines tied to the WFA's Global Alliance for Responsible Media, known as GARM.

In a joint statement, the two organizations said the settlement puts the litigation behind them and opens a new chapter in their relationship. The WFA also said it will not restart GARM or launch a similar initiative, while emphasizing its long-standing commitment to freedom of speech and brand safety.

The agreement follows earlier court action that dismissed X's lawsuit, with the platform later appealing the ruling. With the dispute now resolved, the focus shifts toward how platforms and advertisers can build clearer standards for responsible digital advertising.

This development may help shape a more balanced future for online media, where brand safety and platform openness evolve together.
