Why AI-Generated Menus Often Feel So Similar

AI-generated restaurant menus are revealing a sameness problem, as image models create overly polished food visuals that feel generic, uncanny, and less human.

Why AI-Generated Menus Often Feel So Similar

AI-made restaurant menus are drawing attention for a curious reason: many of them look polished, but also strangely alike. From bagel boards to burger specials, the food illustrations often share the same smooth textures, perfect symmetry, and overly idealized styling.

According to experts in AI detection and digital futures, this effect comes from how image models are trained. Systems such as large language models and diffusion models learn from massive datasets, then reproduce the patterns they see most often. When those datasets lean toward familiar restaurant branding and "pleasant" visuals, the results can become visually standardized.

Alex Lisle, CTO of Reality Defender, describes the output as a kind of over-optimized food design, while Lee Rainie of Elon University notes that AI tends to smooth away rough edges in both language and imagery. That smoothing can make menus feel less human, even when the details are technically accurate.

The effect can grow stronger when AI-generated menus are edited repeatedly. Each revision may push the design a little further toward rounder shapes, softer colors, and more uniform food presentation. Over time, the result can look less like a real menu and more like a template refined by machine preference.

Researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen have also identified an uncanny-valley response in AI food images, where visuals that are almost realistic can feel more unsettling than clearly artificial ones. In other words, the closer the image gets to reality without fully reaching it, the more noticeable the mismatch becomes.

For restaurants, the lesson is clear: visual identity matters as much as convenience. As AI tools become more common in design workflows, the challenge will be using them without losing the distinct character that makes a brand feel authentic. In the future, the most successful AI design may be the kind that looks less generic and more human.
