Musicboard, an innovative platform for discovering and recommending music, has encountered some challenges recently, as reported by its users. Over the last few months, many have noted that the app has faced various outages, its website has gone offline, and the Android version has vanished from the Play Store.
This situation has raised concerns among its loyal, albeit small, user community. With approximately 462,000 downloads to date, users have taken to online forums to suggest alternatives and provide support to one another while awaiting updates.
While it's not uncommon for applications to experience downtime, users typically expect some form of communication from developers. However, Musicboard users have expressed frustration over the lack of updates, prompting them to reach out to media outlets for assistance in connecting with the team, primarily to facilitate data exports.
In response to the situation, some users have banded together under an initiative dubbed "Help Save Musicboard," led by a dedicated user known as Lavarini, with efforts being coordinated by volunteers.
TechCrunch reached out to Musicboard for clarification and received a brief statement, although it failed to address the ongoing issues comprehensively, merely labeling the outages as "temporary downtime."
The statement, which came from the Musicboard team, reassured users that the app is not shutting down. It emphasized that the servers experienced brief disruptions, which have now been resolved, and that they are collaborating with Google Play to restore the app. The message concluded with a commitment to maintaining communication with users.
Despite these reassurances, follow-up inquiries remained unanswered.
The founders of Musicboard, Johannes Vermandois and Erik Heimer, have been involved in other ventures as well. Their AI application, Frank AI, was on track for acquisition by Freedom Holdings, Inc., but the deal was ultimately terminated in September 2024. Dreamsands, Inc., which manages Frank AI on the App Store, also oversees another application, Helm, designed as an AI therapist.
Lavarini expressed that the community's efforts to sustain the app will persist, emphasizing that the Help Save Musicboard initiative is focused on raising awareness and fostering discussions about the long-term viability of this indie platform and its community.
