Volkswagen Launches Testing of Autonomous Microbuses in Los Angeles with Uber

Volkswagen's subsidiary, MOIA America, in collaboration with Uber, has initiated trials for self-driving microbuses in Los Angeles. This marks a significant milestone as they gear up to launch an autonomous ride-hailing service by late 2026.

Last year, the two companies revealed their ambitious vision to introduce a commercial robotaxi service featuring autonomous versions of Volkswagen's electric ID. Buzz minivan across various U.S. cities over the next decade, with Los Angeles being the inaugural location.

Testing is set to commence in the coming weeks, utilizing approximately 10 autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles. These driverless models are designed to accommodate four passengers.

Paul DeLong, the president of commercialization at MOIA America, emphasized that Los Angeles is an ideal market for introducing autonomous vehicles, citing the city's rich automotive culture and its openness to innovative mobility solutions.

Since the initial announcement, MOIA America and Uber have established a joint facility in Los Angeles to manage daily fleet operations. Although the current test fleet is modest, Volkswagen anticipates scaling up to over 100 autonomous ID. Buzz vehicles. Initially, these vehicles will operate with a human safety operator on board, with fully driverless operations projected to commence in 2027.

Sascha Meyer, chief commercial officer for Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility, remarked that this advancement signifies the robust momentum behind their strategy to integrate autonomous mobility into everyday life.

The MOIA America brand is a recent rebranding of Volkswagen's autonomous vehicle initiatives in the U.S., previously known as Volkswagen ADMT. The MOIA brand, established in 2018, is well-recognized in Europe, where it operates ride-pooling services and tests autonomous technology in cities like Hamburg, Berlin, and Munich. This name change aims to strengthen the connection between their U.S. and European operations.

MOIA America is still navigating regulatory requirements before launching a commercial robotaxi service in California. This includes obtaining necessary permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles and a ride-hailing permit from the California Public Utilities Commission.

In parallel, Uber is diversifying its approach to autonomous vehicles, forming partnerships with 25 companies to explore various applications in delivery, drones, and trucking. Notably, Uber's collaboration with Waymo is among its most prominent ventures in the U.S. Furthermore, Uber is expanding its autonomous vehicle ambitions internationally, securing agreements with companies in China and partnerships with startups like the U.K.-based Wayve.

Recently, Uber has also reached an agreement with Rivian to procure 10,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis, with plans for deployment in San Francisco and Miami by 2028. This deal includes an initial investment of $300 million from Uber.

The ongoing developments in autonomous vehicle technology signify a transformative shift in urban mobility, potentially reshaping transportation landscapes and enhancing accessibility in cities worldwide.
