Nevada has taken a significant step toward large-scale autonomous mobility. The Nevada Transportation Authority has approved permits for Tesla, Uber and Waymo to run commercial robotaxi services in Clark County, the region that includes Las Vegas.
The combined approvals open the door to as many as 8,000 robotaxis across the county over the next 12 months. Tesla received authorization for up to 5,000 vehicles, while Waymo and Uber were each cleared for 1,000. Uber's operations will be supported through its autonomous vehicle partners Motional and Zoox, with Zoox already holding a separate permit for 100 vehicles.
Even with the green light, the rollout may unfold more gradually than the numbers suggest. Company representatives indicated that reaching the full permitted scale within a year is unlikely. Tesla's team said 5,000 vehicles is a ceiling rather than a near-term target, and that a deployment of around 2,500 would already be a strong result.
Las Vegas is now positioned to become one of the most closely watched robotaxi markets in the United States. The city's roads, tourism flow and dense urban zones make it a high-visibility testbed for autonomous ride services competing for the same passengers.
Uber is promoting a mixed model that combines human drivers and autonomous vehicles, arguing that a blended network could help cities add capacity more smoothly and respond to peak demand without sudden disruption. That approach contrasts with the more fully autonomous direction favored by some rivals.
For Clark County, the decision signals a new phase in urban transportation planning, where software, mobility platforms and electric fleets converge. The next year could help define how quickly autonomous ride-hailing becomes part of everyday city life.
