The Victoria and Albert Museum temporarily closed three of its London venues on September 4 ahead of a planned two-day strike by unionized staff. The affected sites were the East Museum, the East Storehouse, and the Young V&A in Bethnal Green.
About 700 employees, representing more than half of the organization's workforce, joined the action through the Prospect Union's heritage division and the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS). During the strike, staff gathered outside the buildings with signs calling for fair pay and improved access to water.
Prospect's National Secretary for heritage, Paula Lamont, said the closures highlighted how essential staff are to the museum's daily operations. The union also indicated that further industrial action could follow if discussions do not progress, including at the V&A's South Kensington flagship.
