The Victoria and Albert Museum has revised its break policy at V&A East Storehouse after workers voted to strike over working conditions. The decision follows weeks of discussion around access to rest breaks, hydration, and shift structure at the collections site.
According to the Museums Association, the union Prospect said its members had pushed for two paid breaks per shift, matching arrangements already available to other V&A staff. The museum later confirmed that it would grant the requested breaks, describing the move as part of ongoing negotiations that began in February.
The V&A said its current pay offer includes a 3.6 percent overall increase, a higher rise for the lowest-paid staff, and a commitment to remain above the London Living Wage. It also stated that staff have always had access to water, toilet facilities, and regular breaks, while additional measures were introduced during the heatwave to support both employees and visitors.
V&A East Storehouse, located in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is one of the museum's most ambitious public-facing collections spaces, designed to combine storage, access, and visitor engagement. The latest policy change shows how cultural institutions are increasingly balancing operational demands with staff wellbeing and modern workplace expectations.
