Uber's Next Phase: Travel, AI, and a More Focused Platform Strategy

Uber's Next Phase: Travel, AI, and a More Focused Platform Strategy

Uber is expanding beyond ride-hailing and delivery with a sharper focus on travel, automation, and AI-driven tools. The company now offers hotel bookings through a partnership with Expedia, along with features such as local shopping assistance and boat rentals in Europe. According to Uber Chief Product Officer Sachin Kansal, the goal is not to become a universal super-app, but to build around the moments users already rely on most.

Travel is emerging as a major growth lane. Uber says a large share of its trips happen outside users' home cities, making airport transfers, accommodation, food, and local errands part of one connected experience. Membership benefits through Uber One also play a central role, with credits and cashback designed to encourage use across rides, Eats, and travel services.

On the mobility side, Uber is deepening its work with autonomous vehicle partners while also building its own data capability through AV Labs. The unit uses sensor-equipped vehicles to collect driving data, helping Uber support autonomy partners and better understand complex real-world scenarios. Kansal described the company's approach as a hybrid model that keeps human drivers and autonomous vehicles working together in the same city.

AI is already visible in practical features. Drivers can receive guidance on where demand is strongest, Eats users can build grocery carts by voice, and riders can request trips with more detailed spoken instructions. Uber is also exploring more agent-like experiences that could eventually help users plan and book trips more seamlessly.

For Uber, the strategy is clear: build useful products, partner where expertise already exists, and avoid trying to do everything at once. That balance could shape how the platform evolves as travel, automation, and AI become more deeply connected in everyday life.
