Toyota Integrates Seven Agility Humanoid Robots at Canadian Facility

In a significant advancement for automation, Toyota's Canadian manufacturing branch has welcomed seven humanoid robots into its workforce, specifically for the assembly of RAV4 SUVs. This initiative follows a year-long pilot program and is part of a robots-as-a-service arrangement.

Tim Hollander, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, expressed enthusiasm about the deployment, stating, "We are excited to utilize Digit to enhance the experience of our team members and boost operational efficiency in our facilities."

The robots, known as Digit, are developed by Agility Robotics, a company that emerged from Oregon State University in 2015. These humanoid robots are designed to function in industrial settings, often facilitating tasks between different automated production lines. In this case, they will be responsible for unloading totes filled with auto parts from an automated warehouse tugger.

While the deployment of seven robots might appear modest compared to the flashy demonstrations often seen in technology showcases, the real-world integration of humanoid robots into workplace environments is both rare and complex. Successfully implementing such technology involves not only demonstrating capabilities in controlled settings but also ensuring seamless integration into existing workflows, including maintenance and charging.

Ram Devarajulu, a VP at Cambridge Consultants, highlighted the importance of understanding real-world applications, noting that "when tech companies spend time in the field grasping the tasks at hand, that's when we will witness a significant increase in adoption."

Agility Robotics stands out as a leader in transitioning robots from laboratories to practical applications, with Digit already operating in similar roles for logistics companies such as GXO, Schaeffler, and Amazon. The firm also offers a cloud-based software solution named Arc, enabling users to manage their robot fleets effectively. According to Pras Velagapudi, Agility's CTO, artificial intelligence plays a crucial role in lowering deployment costs and streamlining the setup process.

He noted, "The cost of deployment can often exceed the price of the robot itself. AI tools help us reduce these costs and enhance the speed at which robots can be configured and achieve desired performance levels."

This collaboration between TMMC and Agility aims to explore additional applications that can alleviate human workers from monotonous tasks, allowing them to focus on more valuable responsibilities. Furthermore, the company is working on developing a next-generation robot that will operate safely alongside human workers, as existing models capable of lifting heavy loads are still deemed too unpredictable for autonomous operation in close proximity to people.

Other companies, including Figure.AI, have also been experimenting with humanoid robots in manufacturing settings. For instance, Figure.AI tested its Figure 02 robots at a BMW factory, where they successfully unloaded 90,000 parts over a ten-month period. Other notable players in this field include Apptronic, Unitree, Tesla, Boston Dynamics, 1X Technology, and Reflex Robotics.
