U.S. Electric Vehicle Sales Gain Momentum for Third Straight Quarter

Electric vehicles are regaining ground in the U.S. market. Sales increased for a third consecutive quarter, and EVs accounted for 6.1% of new-vehicle sales in Q3 2026--their strongest market share since Q3 2025, according to a report by Cox Automotive.

Cox Automotive says more competitive pricing and renewed consumer interest amid higher gasoline prices are helping the market find its footing. Toyota, Rivian and Subaru were among the leading brands during the quarter.

Toyota bZ and Lexus RZ sales roughly doubled after updated versions reached dealerships. The refreshed models feature larger batteries, more powerful motors, faster charging and charging ports compatible with Tesla's standard.

Tesla sales were down 20% from a year earlier, but the company still accounted for more than half of U.S. EV sales in the quarter.

The latest figures point to a market adapting to changing prices, vehicle options and consumer priorities. Continued improvements in affordability and charging could help make electric vehicles accessible to more drivers.
