Tesla to End Cybertruck Production in 2027, Shifting Capacity to Cybercabs

Tesla plans to stop producing the Cybertruck in 2027 and repurpose the factory space to build more two-seat Cybercab robotaxis, CEO Elon Musk has announced.

The move marks a strategic shift for the electric-vehicle maker as it expands its focus on artificial intelligence and robotics. Tesla began delivering the Cybertruck in late 2023, after first unveiling it in 2019. Musk had projected annual sales of about 250,000, but the company has sold only tens of thousands in total over the past three years.

Factory space for robotaxis

Tesla has begun operating Cybercabs in Austin, Texas, and has said it intends to expand the service to other cities, with Dallas among the next planned locations. The company also operates robotaxi services using Model Y vehicles in several U.S. cities.

The Cybertruck is the latest vehicle Tesla plans to discontinue as it reallocates manufacturing capacity. Earlier this year, the company said it would end production of the Model S and Model X, using the space for its Optimus humanoid robots.

When the Cybertruck was introduced, Tesla promised a starting price below $40,000 and a range of up to 500 miles. The vehicle arrived later than initially planned, with a higher starting price and a shorter maximum range than those early targets.

Redirecting production capacity toward autonomous transport and robotics signals how Tesla is reshaping its priorities. The shift may help determine how quickly robotaxis move from limited trials to broader everyday use.
