Tesla has started manufacturing its Optimus humanoid robots at its Fremont, California, factory, on a production line previously used for electric vehicles. The company said its first production-quality units demonstrate that the current process can support a commercial product, though both the robot's hardware and manufacturing methods will continue to evolve.
The launch comes as Tesla increases investment in robotics, artificial intelligence and autonomous driving. In its third-quarter 2026 update to shareholders, the company reported revenue of $28.04 billion, close to the $28.09 billion recorded a year earlier. Net income was $787 million, down 43% year over year.
Electric-vehicle sales generated about $20 billion in revenue, while services and other revenue rose 33% to $4.6 billion. Tesla said the services segment delivered a record $734 million in gross profit for the quarter.
As production methods mature, Optimus could help expand the role of humanoid robots in manufacturing and other commercial settings.
