Tor Project has expanded its privacy toolkit with Snowflake Volunteer, a new Android app developed with Bloco that helps people connect to the Tor network in places where access is restricted.
The app works by turning a phone into a temporary bridge. When it is enabled, it offers a connection path that looks like a regular video call through WebRTC, making it harder to block without affecting broader internet services. For the user on the receiving end, Tor continues to function with its usual layers of encryption and anonymity.
Using the app is intentionally simple. After adjusting battery settings so it can run in the background, users only need to switch it on. From there, the phone can quietly support incoming connections without account creation or complex setup. The app also includes controls for limiting activity to charging periods or unmetered networks, helping users manage device usage.
In testing, the app showed light data use and no noticeable strain on the device. It is designed as an emergency-style contribution to internet access, rather than a constant drain on performance. Users can also track how many connections their device has supported over time, adding a practical sense of participation.
Snowflake Volunteer joins other ways to support the network, including desktop browser tools and mobile options tied to Tor-compatible apps. The project reflects a broader shift toward decentralized, user-powered internet access that blends privacy with everyday devices. In the future, tools like this could make resilient connectivity more accessible across the mobile ecosystem.
