The phenomenon of nearsightedness, or myopia, is rapidly becoming a global concern. Recent projections indicate that by 2050, nearly half of the world's population may experience this condition. Alarmingly, in certain regions of East Asia, close to 90% of young adults are already affected.

Myopia is characterized by the ability to see nearby objects clearly while distant ones appear blurred, necessitating optical correction for clarity. Many parents attribute their children's declining vision to excessive smartphone use, a concern that is supported by research. A study from 2025 revealed that the risk of myopia escalates significantly with increased screen time, especially beyond four hours daily.

However, the issue is more complex than just screen exposure. A groundbreaking study published in Cell Reports by researchers at SUNY College of Optometry suggests that the combination of prolonged screen use and poor indoor lighting contributes significantly to the rise in myopia. They found that focusing on close objects in dim environments places excessive strain on our retinas.

The Dim Light Trap

But why does staying indoors contribute to elongated eyeballs, a hallmark of myopia? When exposed to bright sunlight, our pupils naturally constrict to protect the retina while allowing sufficient light to enter. This constriction also occurs when focusing on nearby objects, but in low-light conditions, it can lead to reduced retinal illumination.

Urusha Maharjan, a doctoral student and lead author of the study, explains that when we engage with screens or books in dim settings, our pupils can narrow excessively, especially for those already experiencing nearsightedness. This excessive strain can ultimately lead to permanent changes in eye shape.

Understanding Visual Pathways

The SUNY team conducted an experiment involving 34 participants, comprising both those with normal vision and individuals with myopia. Using specialized eye-tracking glasses, they monitored eye movements and pupil responses while participants focused on blurred targets. The results revealed that nearsighted individuals exhibited a more pronounced pupil constriction response when attempting to focus on nearby objects.

Interestingly, the research found that dark targets elicited a stronger pupil response than lighter ones, indicating heightened sensitivity in the visual pathways when focusing on close objects. Furthermore, myopia alters the way eyes respond to blinking, weakening the natural protective mechanisms in nearsighted individuals.

This research highlights the importance of outdoor activities in preventing nearsightedness. Natural light exposure is crucial for maintaining healthy retinal function and reducing the strain caused by prolonged near-focus tasks. Unfortunately, outdoor playtime among children has significantly decreased, which may contribute to rising levels of anxiety and depression in this demographic.

As we look ahead, studies suggest that by 2050, an estimated five billion people could be affected by myopia. This underscores the necessity of fostering habits that promote eye health, particularly for younger generations.

While medical interventions exist, such as atropine eye drops and multifocal lenses, their effectiveness may diminish if individuals continue spending excessive time focusing on screens in poorly lit environments.
