The Bennett Prize Increases Award to $75,000, Encouraging Women Artists to Apply

The art scene is undergoing significant changes, with challenges such as gallery closures and reduced funding impacting many artists. In this context, The Bennett Prize, a biennial award dedicated to women painters specializing in figurative realism, has announced an increase in its grand prize from $50,000 to an impressive $75,000.

This increase comes at a crucial time for artists, as highlighted by Baltimore-based painter and 2023 finalist, Monica Ikegwu. She notes, "The Bennetts raising The Prize amount could supplement somebody who actually needs it," emphasizing the financial relief it could provide in a challenging artistic landscape.

Established in 2018 by collectors Steven Alan Bennett and Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt, The Bennett Prize aims to elevate the visibility of women painters in a field historically dominated by men. The call for entries is currently open, with ten finalists set to showcase their work in a group exhibition at the Muskegon Museum of Art in Michigan in spring 2027. The announcement of the winner and a runner-up will take place at this exhibition, with the runner-up receiving the Dr. Elaine Melotti Schmidt Prize of $10,000.

Artists who have participated in The Prize encourage others to apply, regardless of their confidence levels. Aleah Chapin, a Los Angeles-based painter, emphasizes the importance of putting oneself out there, stating, "I'm practicing an application, and I'm also practicing getting a rejection."

Ikegwu's own experience illustrates the impact of The Prize. Despite initial discouragement from her instructors regarding her unique style, she applied and gained recognition, leading to her work being acquired by the Muskegon Museum of Art. "It lets you know that the work you're doing is of the level to be in a competition seen by thousands of people," she reflects.

Michelle Doll, who received an honorable mention in the inaugural Bennett Prize competition, underscores the significant role the Bennetts play in supporting artists. She describes their investment as not merely financial but as a commitment to amplifying artists' voices and fostering their recognition in the broader art community.

Past participants have found that involvement in The Bennett Prize has led to further opportunities, with many securing additional awards and gallery representation. As Chapin articulates, "If I had something like this when I was early in my career, it would have been tremendously helpful."

For those hesitant about applying due to evolving artistic styles, the consensus among artists is clear: don't wait. Doll encourages artists to showcase their work, regardless of its current state, as the main goal is to present it to the public.

The application window for The Bennett Prize is open from April 13, 2026, until September 19, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. MST. It is important to note that the prize is not open to hobbyists or students, nor to artists whose work has been sold for $35,000 or more.

This initiative not only highlights the importance of supporting women artists but also paves the way for a more inclusive future in the art world.
