Sony Offers Select PS5 Owners Up to $400 for Trade-Ins

Sony is inviting some PlayStation 5 owners to trade in their consoles for a payment of up to $400. The offer is being handled through Back Market, rather than by Sony directly, and the final amount depends on the console's model, condition, storage and included accessories.

To qualify for the highest quoted value, consoles must be in good working order and may need to include two controllers. Sony's standard PS5 package comes with one controller, so owners should check the offer's requirements before proceeding. The trade-in option is not limited to people contacted by Sony: Back Market also accepts trade-ins through its own program. GameStop is another option, though its stated cash and store-credit values are lower.

The initiative could help put more pre-owned consoles into circulation as new PS5 systems become costly or harder to find. It also reflects a broader retail approach: encouraging owners who no longer use their devices to resell them, making existing hardware available to other players. If such programs expand, resale networks could play a larger role in keeping gaming systems accessible as demand shifts.
