Samsung Partners with Startup to Enhance Grid Management with Innovative Software and Batteries

The electrical grid has undergone significant transformations over the past decade, driven by advancements in solar, wind, and battery technologies. However, it still grapples with persistent challenges, particularly during peak demand periods.

Michael Phelan, co-founder and CEO of Grid Beyond, shared insights on this issue, stating, "The grid faces a peak problem. There's generally sufficient power, but during peak hours, shortages can occur." This situation is especially pressing for tech companies and data center developers that require substantial electricity for AI operations.

Phelan emphasized that having adequate energy stored in batteries or the ability to reduce industrial loads can facilitate the development of large-scale data centers, or "hyperscalers." Grid Beyond is at the forefront of this evolution, creating hardware and software solutions that integrate various grid components to function as larger virtual power plants. Currently, the startup manages approximately 1 gigawatt of renewable energy sources and several gigawatts of demand response across commercial and industrial sectors.

To expand its capabilities, Grid Beyond has successfully secured €12 million ($13.8 million) in funding, led by Samsung Ventures. Other notable investors include ABB, Act Venture Cattail, Alantra's Energy Transition Fund, and several others.

With installations across Australia, Ireland, Japan, the UK, and the US, Grid Beyond's hardware controllers are embedded in batteries and renewable energy facilities. The company's journey began in Ireland, where the integration of wind power presented unique challenges, making it crucial to balance the grid effectively.

Traditionally, grid operators have incentivized heavy users to reduce power consumption during extreme demand periods. This approach is often more economical than constructing new infrastructure. As renewable energy sources have proliferated, the practice has gained momentum, allowing businesses to scale back usage during off-peak hours.

Grid Beyond has also embraced the potential of battery technology, managing significant energy storage systems, including a 200-megawatt battery in California. These batteries provide a flexible supply that can help mitigate fluctuations in renewable energy output.

One of the key advantages of batteries is their rapid response capability, allowing for swift buying and selling of power, which enhances grid stability. This efficiency is particularly beneficial for data centers, which typically experience peak power demands during AI training sessions, potentially destabilizing the grid. By utilizing batteries on-site or connecting to a nearby virtual power plant, data centers can smooth their energy profiles, minimizing disruptive fluctuations.

As the energy landscape evolves, the collaboration between companies like Samsung and innovative startups such as Grid Beyond is paving the way for a more resilient and responsive electrical grid, ultimately shaping a sustainable energy future.
