Rosy Simas: Crafting a Sanctuary of Peace in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS -- On February 12, amid significant social unrest, Minnesota-based interdisciplinary artist Rosy Simas unveiled her installation, A:gajé:gwah dɛsa'nigö:wɛ:nye: (i hope it will stir your mind), at the Walker Art Center. This contemplative exhibition offers a tranquil refuge, inviting visitors to engage with thoughtfully crafted objects, such as salt bottles woven from corn husks, each representing a tribute to Simas's relatives. The installation serves as a serene space for reflection amidst the surrounding turmoil.

Inspired by her fifth great-grandfather's half-brother, Handsome Lake (Ganyodaiyo'), who advocated for peace following years of conflict, Simas aims to foster a sense of harmony through her work. The exhibition, which runs until July 5, is part of a two-part project that includes performances scheduled for May 13-16. While Simas is primarily recognized for her choreography, she has seamlessly integrated visual art into her practice, gaining national acclaim recently with a Creative Capital Award for her visual artistry.

In an interview, Simas reflected on the evolution of her work since its inception, noting that the installation's intent is to evoke rather than provoke, creating a calming atmosphere for visitors. "This isn't just about creating a safe space; it's about providing a place where individuals can connect with themselves," she explained.

Simas acknowledged the challenges of opening an exhibition during a time of federal presence in the area, emphasizing the importance of gathering spaces for community during oppressive times. "It's crucial to have spaces where people can be themselves," she stated, highlighting the need for artistic expression in difficult circumstances.

The artist also shared her thoughts on the static nature of gallery exhibitions, expressing a desire for her work to remain dynamic and responsive to the changing environment. "I find it difficult to present something that remains unchanged for months," she admitted, indicating her commitment to community engagement and the iterative nature of her art.

Visitors to the exhibition experience a choreography of movement through various stations, inviting active participation. Simas explained that her design reflects Haudenosaunee traditions, encouraging attendees to engage with the space in a counterclockwise manner, enhancing their sensory experience as they interact with the artwork.

Simas's work emphasizes the significance of visibility for Native, BIPOC, and queer voices, which she believes are often suppressed. "We must continue to create," she urged, acknowledging the impact of recent events on individuals' ability to express themselves artistically.

Ultimately, the installation aspires to create a space that resonates with visitors, allowing them to contemplate their experiences and the materials presented. As Simas continues to navigate her artistic journey, her commitment to fostering peace and connection through art remains a beacon of hope for the future.
