Roblox has announced the introduction of two new account types aimed at providing age-appropriate access to its vast gaming platform. This initiative, revealed on Monday, is designed specifically for children and younger teens, ensuring a safer online environment.
The launch follows the implementation of mandatory age verification checks in January, which users must complete to access chat features. This age-check technology will also play a pivotal role in assigning users to the new account categories. For those who have not completed the verification, access will be limited to a curated selection of games suitable for younger audiences.
Children aged five to nine will be categorized under a "Roblox Kids" account, while those between nine and 15 will fall under the "Roblox Select" account. Users aged 16 and older will continue with a standard Roblox account. Notably, only users 18 and above will have access to "Restricted Content," which encompasses themes of strong violence, romantic elements, and harsh language.
The rollout of these new accounts is set to begin globally in June, with Roblox providing a transition period for existing users to complete the necessary age-check process.
Roblox Kids accounts will allow access to games rated "Minimal" or "Mild," which may include mild violence and humor. For users under nine, chat features will be disabled by default, and communication with others will only be possible if parents specifically designate approved contacts.
Roblox Select accounts will permit access to games rated up to "Moderate" and enable users to chat with peers in a similar age group. Parents will also have the ability to approve specific games that are otherwise restricted under their children's accounts, facilitating a more customized gaming experience.
To ensure safety, both account types will feature games that have undergone Roblox's rigorous three-step screening process. This includes verifying developers, conducting real-time evaluations with older users, and ensuring that games meet specific content maturity standards.
