Roblox has announced the launch of an innovative AI-driven chat rephrasing feature designed to enhance communication on its platform. This real-time tool automatically substitutes banned words with more respectful alternatives, aiming to foster a more civil environment for players.
The new functionality marks a significant upgrade from Roblox's existing text filter, which previously replaced inappropriate terms with hash marks. The company recognized that this method could disrupt conversations, making them challenging to follow. With the introduction of rephrasing, users will now see their messages transformed into more appropriate language while retaining their original intent.
For instance, a previously censored message like "Hurry TF up!" would now be rephrased to simply "Hurry up!" This change not only keeps the dialogue flowing but also ensures that all participants are aware of the rephrasing, contributing to a respectful chat atmosphere.
Rajiv Bhatia, Roblox's Vice President of User and Discovery Product, emphasized the importance of chat in connecting players. He stated, "Real-time rephrasing helps keep gameplay and conversations on track while guiding language toward what's appropriate. This approach reduces friction in chat while maintaining the standards that help keep our community civil."
While the new feature enhances the chat experience, Roblox reassures users that its safety system remains active to address more serious behavioral issues. The rephrasing tool is compatible with all languages supported by Roblox's automatic translation services.
Additionally, Roblox is refining its text-filtering system to better identify various forms of banned language. Early results indicate that the system is improving its detection capabilities, notably for leetspeak and other attempts to circumvent filters. This enhancement has led to a remarkable 20-fold reduction in false negatives related to the sharing of personal information.
