In response to growing concerns about the accessibility of manual door releases in vehicles, Rivian is making significant changes to its upcoming R2 SUV. Recent feedback has highlighted the challenges posed by electronic door handles, particularly during emergencies. Rivian aims to enhance safety and convenience with its new design.
The front doors of the R2 will continue to operate similarly to those in the existing R1 models, featuring an electronic button for opening and a manual release latch conveniently located within the interior handle.
Notably, the rear doors will also include an electronic button, but Rivian has revamped the manual release mechanism. Previously, R1 passengers had to remove a panel to access a release cord for the manual latch. In the new R2, this release cord has been repositioned to a more logical location at the front of the handle. However, it remains somewhat concealed behind a plastic cover, which may still pose a slight challenge for quick access.
As the R2 SUV is not expected to enter production for several months, detailed instructions for the manual release are yet to be provided. A recent video from JerryRigEverything's Zack Nelson illustrates the new design, showcasing the necessary steps for accessing the manual release in case of a power failure.
While the manual release is still somewhat hidden, its new placement is a step forward in making it more intuitive than before. Rivian's approach reflects a broader industry trend, as other manufacturers, including Tesla, are also revising their door release designs to improve safety and accessibility.
