A new all-in-one reading app
Readwise has launched Readwise Books, a digital platform that brings together an e-book shop, a reading app and tools for tracking books. The company says the store offers millions of e-books from major publishers and others, initially in the U.S., alongside print books and some audiobooks.
Beyond recording titles and completion dates, the app tracks reading sessions and metrics such as words read, pace and time spent. Readers can also follow progress with friends, upload DRM-free EPUB files, listen to books using text-to-speech and log sessions from Kindle's browser-based Cloud Reader. Physical-book progress can be recorded by taking a photo of the book.
Readwise Books is designed to work with services beyond its own store, with a public API and an MCP server that can connect reading data to compatible tools. With publishers' permission, planned AI features include session summaries, definitions, translations and questions about the passage a reader is viewing. HarperCollins is currently the only publisher identified as having opted in.
The app is free for now and is in beta; access requires an invitation unless a user already subscribes to Readwise. Some AI capabilities may later become paid features. By making reading habits easier to understand and connect across platforms, Readwise Books points toward a more personalized and open digital reading experience.
