"Raphael: Sublime Poetry" Exhibition at the Met Brings Together Historic Works

The renowned Italian Renaissance artist Raphael, often celebrated as the "prince of painters," is best known for masterpieces like The Marriage of the Virgin (1504) and The School of Athens (1509-11). However, a new exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, titled "Raphael: Sublime Poetry," emphasizes the significance of his lesser-known sketches and drawings. Opening this month, the exhibition showcases over 200 pieces, including many of Raphael's drawings, and marks a reunion of artworks that have remained apart for centuries.

This landmark exhibition, the culmination of nearly a decade of research, is designed to highlight Raphael's artistic evolution and the intricate relationships between his works. As noted by exhibition curator Carmen C. Bambach, the show aims to reunite pieces with their historical counterparts for the first time, bringing together works from various lesser-known museums that house hidden gems.

Among the notable reunions featured in the exhibition are:

Coronation of the Virgin (Oddi Altarpiece) (1502-4)

This altarpiece, considered Raphael's first independent painting, features a dynamic portrayal of the Virgin's coronation. The exhibition reunites the main panel with preparatory studies and drawings, allowing visitors to appreciate Raphael's creative process.

Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints (Colonna Altarpiece) (ca. 1504)

Originally commissioned for a private worship space, this altarpiece showcases Raphael's mastery of composition and color. The exhibition brings together the main panel with previously dispersed predella panels, allowing for a comprehensive view of his artistic vision.

Madonna of the Meadow (1505-6)

This piece reflects Raphael's experimentation with figure arrangement, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. The exhibition will unite various studies that demonstrate his innovative approach to composition.

The Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist in a Landscape (Alba Madonna) (c. 1509-11)

This circular painting, depicting a tender moment between the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, will be displayed alongside preparatory sketches that reveal Raphael's meticulous planning.

Virgin and Child with Raphael, Tobias, and Saint Jerome (Madonna of the Fish) (1512-14)

This altarpiece, often overlooked, will be shown with its preliminary studies, highlighting Raphael's collaborative process with his workshop.

Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia with Saints Paul, John the Evangelist, Augustine, and Mary Magdalen (1515-16)

This captivating work, commissioned by a female patron, will be displayed with early drawings that illustrate Raphael's evolving design strategies.

"Raphael: Sublime Poetry" runs from March 29 to June 28, inviting art enthusiasts to explore the connections between these remarkable works and envision how Raphael's artistry continues to inspire future generations.
