Poke Simplifies AI Agents with Text Messaging Access

Poke, a new startup, is revolutionizing the accessibility of AI agents by allowing users to interact with them through popular messaging platforms such as iMessage, SMS, Telegram, and WhatsApp in select regions. Launched publicly in March, Poke aims to provide a personal assistant that can perform a variety of tasks through a user-friendly text interface.

This innovative AI agent is designed to assist with daily activities, including managing calendars, tracking health and fitness, controlling smart home devices, and even photo editing. Unlike general-purpose AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Poke focuses on enabling users to accomplish tasks swiftly and efficiently.

For instance, users can ask Poke to notify them of important emails, remind them to bring an umbrella, or provide updates on their health goals. The platform allows users to create personalized automations in plain text, which can then be shared with friends, enhancing the collaborative experience.

Backed by notable investors such as Spark Capital and General Catalyst, Poke recently raised an additional $10 million, bringing its total valuation to $300 million. The startup's co-founder, Marvin von Hagen, revealed that Poke emerged from observing user interactions with their previous AI product, which was initially designed for email assistance. The team recognized the demand for a more versatile tool that could cater to a broader range of needs.

Setting up Poke is straightforward; users simply visit Poke.com, click "Get Started," and enter their phone number--no app installation is required. The AI adapts to various tasks by selecting the most suitable model, whether proprietary or open-source, ensuring flexibility and efficiency.

Poke also incorporates a security model that prioritizes user privacy, allowing individuals to control what data is shared. The platform has already witnessed thousands of user-created automations, which the company plans to feature in its recipe directory to inspire further creativity.

With a pricing model that starts free and adjusts based on usage, Poke aims to be accessible to a wide audience. Users can negotiate monthly fees during beta testing, with costs varying based on the complexity of tasks. The goal for Poke is to integrate seamlessly into daily life, fostering a product that could potentially reach a billion users.

As the demand for user-friendly AI systems continues to grow, Poke's approach may redefine how individuals interact with technology, paving the way for a future where AI becomes an integral part of everyday tasks.
