Paris's iconic Palais Garnier is facing a major restoration rethink after lead was identified during renovation work, prompting a longer and more complex planning phase than originally expected.
The historic opera house, opened in 1875 and long associated with The Phantom of the Opera, was initially set for a two-year upgrade. That timeline is now being reassessed, with experts expected to evaluate the safest removal method this summer.
According to the updated outlook, the project could stretch to five years, with the stage closure period likely to be finalized in the fall. If the current plan holds, the work may run from at least 2027 through 2032, while the Paris Opera prepares alternative programming away from the venue.
Paris Opera artistic director Alexander Neef has described the approach as a strategic rotation between the Palais Garnier and Opéra Bastille, allowing one venue to remain active while the other undergoes restoration. The sequence is designed to balance operations, revenue, and long-term preservation.
The renovation budget, previously estimated at 670 million euros, is also under review as the scope of the project evolves. Beyond the immediate schedule shift, the restoration highlights how heritage architecture increasingly depends on advanced safety planning and precision engineering. In the years ahead, such projects may set a new standard for preserving cultural landmarks with greater resilience and care.
