Oscar Awarded to Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata for Innovative Short Film

Artists Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata achieved a remarkable feat at the Oscars, winning the award for Best Live Action Short Film for their thought-provoking piece, Two People Exchanging Saliva. In an unusual twist, the award was shared with the musical comedy short The Singers, marking a rare tie in the competition.

Running for 36 minutes and presented in French, Two People Exchanging Saliva is a dystopian narrative that explores a world where physical intimacy is outlawed, and violations are met with severe penalties. In contrast, The Singers, directed by Sam Davis, is an 18-minute uplifting tale about strangers forming connections through music amid social isolation.

During the award presentation, comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani humorously acknowledged the unexpected tie, reassuring the audience as he announced, "It's a tie--I'm not joking, it's actually a tie."

Singh and Musteata's film debuted at the Telluride Film Festival and has since gained traction on the international festival circuit. Set in contemporary Paris, the film depicts a society where even the simplest acts of affection can lead to dire consequences. The narrative follows Malaise, a saleswoman, and Angine, a frequent customer, as they navigate their burgeoning attraction in a repressive environment.

In his acceptance speech, Singh, known for his intricate performances and storytelling, emphasized the transformative power of art, referencing recent remarks by actor Timothée Chalamet. He stated, "We believe that art can change people's souls... we can change society through art and creativity, through theatre and ballet." Musteata, reflecting on their win, simply described it as "a dream."

Singh has a history of showcasing his work in esteemed galleries, while Musteata, an accomplished writer and curator with a PhD in art history, has collaborated extensively with Singh on various projects, including exhibitions and films.

This win not only highlights the creative talents of Singh and Musteata but also underscores the importance of innovative storytelling in cinema. As filmmakers continue to push boundaries, the future of film may see even more imaginative narratives that challenge societal norms and inspire audiences worldwide.
