OpenAI Introduces Advertising to Free ChatGPT Users

OpenAI has begun testing advertisements for Free and Go tier users in the U.S., while ensuring that paid subscribers remain ad-free, aiming to enhance user experience and access to features.

OpenAI Introduces Advertising to Free ChatGPT Users

On Monday, OpenAI revealed that it has commenced testing advertisements in the United States, targeting users subscribed to its Free and Go tiers.

The Go plan, which offers a budget-friendly subscription at $8 per month in the U.S., was globally launched in mid-January.

According to the company, users of OpenAI's premium plans, such as Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education, will not encounter any advertisements.

In an effort to alleviate worries regarding the potential impact of ads on user experience, OpenAI stated in a blog post: "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT provides, and we ensure that your conversations with ChatGPT remain private from advertisers. Our aim is to utilize ads to enhance access to more advanced ChatGPT features while preserving the trust users have in ChatGPT for essential and personal tasks."

The announcement of this initiative, which was made last month, has attracted attention, including a humorous response from a competitor, Anthropic, during recent Super Bowl advertisements.

In their commercials, Anthropic humorously critiqued the concept of AI companies incorporating ads, depicting scenarios where poorly integrated advertisements disrupt user interactions, illustrated by actors portraying AI chatbots delivering advice alongside irrelevant ads.

OpenAI's CEO expressed frustration over the competitor's mockery, labeling the ads as "dishonest" and criticizing Anthropic as an "authoritarian company."

Consumers have shown resistance to the idea of advertisements within AI responses. OpenAI faced backlash late last year when it tested app suggestions that resembled unwanted ads. Nonetheless, the company recognizes the necessity of generating revenue from its widely used chatbot to sustain its technological advancements and business growth.

While the concerns are valid, critics worry that advertisements might sway ChatGPT's responses. OpenAI has dismissed these fears, asserting that ads will be tailored to provide "what's most helpful to you." The company promises that ads will always be clearly marked as sponsored and distinct from organic content.

In its testing, OpenAI has experimented with aligning ads to users based on conversation topics, previous chats, and past ad interactions. For example, users looking for recipes may see ads for grocery delivery services or meal kits. OpenAI has assured that advertisers will not have access to individual user data, only aggregate metrics related to ad performance.

Users will have the ability to review their ad interaction history and can clear it at any moment. Additionally, OpenAI has indicated that users can dismiss ads, provide feedback, understand why they were shown a certain ad, and manage their ad personalization preferences.

It's important to note that advertisements will not be displayed to users under 18, nor will they appear alongside sensitive topics such as health, politics, or mental health.
