Nvidia, long seen as the defining force behind the AI boom, is now navigating a market it helped create. After peaking in May, its share price has slipped about 15%, even as revenue forecasts continue to rise. The result is a rare valuation reset: the company is now trading at a lower earnings multiple than the average large U.S. firm.

At the same time, investor attention is moving toward memory chips. Micron, one of the largest DRAM makers, has seen its value surge as data centers increasingly need high-bandwidth memory to keep AI systems running efficiently. In this environment, memory has become one of the most important constraints in the AI buildout.

Nvidia's rise was built on major technical breakthroughs, especially CUDA, the software platform that helped make its GPUs the standard for AI research and development. Its processors remain among the most advanced devices in computing. Yet the market is now broadening: major players such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and OpenAI are developing custom chips to reduce dependence on Nvidia and bring compute costs down.

Industry observers say the contrast comes down to supply and demand. GPU availability has improved compared with last year, while demand for DRAM and high-bandwidth memory continues to outpace supply. That imbalance has pushed memory prices sharply higher, with some segments rising many times over in the past year.

For Nvidia, the shift reflects the paradox of leadership in fast-moving technology markets: success can accelerate competition and reshape the economics around it. As AI infrastructure expands, the next phase may be defined not only by faster processors, but by the memory systems that support them.

The coming years could make AI hardware ecosystems more diversified, efficient, and strategically balanced.
