Privacy-focused X viewers Nitter and XCancel have suspended their services following renewed legal pressure from X. The two tools enabled people to read public posts without logging in, while reducing advertising, tracking elements and interface clutter.
A changing access model
Nitter, an open-source project, functioned as an alternative front end for public X content and supported multiple independent services, including XCancel. X has alleged that the project bypassed its API framework and accessed account-related data in ways that breached platform rules.
Although Nitter initially indicated that development would continue after receiving legal guidance, its code repository was moved to read-only status on September 11. Shortly afterward, XCancel announced that it would pause operations until further notice because of developments in the related legal process.
What the pause means for users
Both services had appealed to users seeking a lightweight way to follow public conversations without creating an account or using X's main application. Their model also reflected a wider interest in privacy-conscious browsing and open-source tools that simplify access to public digital content.
For X, however, direct access through its own products remains central to its advertising model, account ecosystem and control over how platform data is used. The latest changes underline the company's continued emphasis on managed API access and platform-led distribution.
The suspension of Nitter and XCancel highlights a defining question for the internet's next chapter: how public online conversations can balance user privacy, open development and sustainable platform business models.
