Four major New York cultural institutions have approved new labor agreements with unionized staff, marking a constructive step for workplace standards across the museum sector. UAW Local 2110 announced that the Brooklyn Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Jewish Museum and American Folk Art Museum have ratified updated contracts.
Brooklyn Museum Raises Pay Floors
The Brooklyn Museum has finalized its second four-year agreement. The contract provides annual wage increases and sets new minimum salaries for full-time roles, ranging from $63,585 to $129,854 depending on position level. These figures will rise by a further 10.34% over the life of the agreement.
Visitor services and retail employees will receive hourly wages of between $28.69 and $32 by the contract's end. The agreement also maintains access to affordable health-care coverage, including out-of-network options.
American Folk Art Museum Reaches First Agreement
The American Folk Art Museum has ratified its first union contract after nearly two years of negotiations. The four-year deal guarantees total annual wage increases of 13.6% for staff, while entry-level store, security and facilities roles will receive retroactive increases ranging from 8% to 22%.
The agreement introduces a formal grievance process, additional compensation for expanded responsibilities and emergency on-site work, and health-care coverage without employee premium contributions. It also establishes guidelines for the use of temporary workers and subcontractors.
The Guggenheim Museum and Jewish Museum unions approved their respective agreements in September. Together, the contracts highlight a growing focus on sustainable cultural careers, fair compensation and long-term institutional collaboration.
These agreements may help shape a future in which museums strengthen both their public missions and the professional foundations of the teams that bring culture to life.
