Eight New York Group Exhibitions Bring Art History, Manga and Telenovelas Into Focus

Beyond the season's major museum retrospectives, New York's group exhibitions explore a wide range of artistic traditions and ideas. From manga and Renaissance bronze to telenovelas and women's craft, these shows offer fresh ways to encounter art and its histories.

Stories, identity and artistic expression

At Americas Society, "Telenovela" brings together around 50 works from the 1970s to today, examining how melodrama reflects and challenges social expectations across the Americas. The exhibition includes a project by Mexican artist Pablo Helguera and runs through March 27, 2027.

"Incendiaries" at New York University's 80WSE Gallery revisits the 1970 "People's Flag Show" and considers how artists have continued to explore creative expression and social activism. It is on view through January 16, 2027.

The American Folk Art Museum's "Locating Girlhood" highlights nearly 100 works made by young women in early America, including needlework, watercolors and painted furniture. The exhibition runs through February 28, 2027.

At Ruiz-Healy Art, "All That Before Us" brings together Jennifer Ling Datchuk and Consuelo Jimenez Underwood. Their works connect ceramics and textiles with ideas of labor, cultural memory and identity. The exhibition is open through November 27, 2026.

Collections and visual traditions

Asia Society marks its 70th anniversary with "Buddha and Shiva, Lotus and Dragon," a selection of 70 sculptures and ceramics from its Rockefeller collection, spanning two millennia of Asian art. It runs through January 3, 2027.

The Brooklyn Museum presents "Art of Manga," featuring more than 600 original drawings and tracing the Japanese comics form from its historical roots to its contemporary influence. The exhibition is on view through January 31, 2027.

At the Frick Collection, "Siena: The Art of Bronze, 1450-1500" spotlights sculptors including Donatello and Vecchietta, placing Sienese bronze-making within the artistic and social forces of the Renaissance. It runs through January 18, 2027.

"Fields of Color X" at Yares Art brings together painters such as Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland and Adolph Gottlieb to explore the Color Field movement and the connections among its artists. The exhibition continues through January 2027.

Together, the exhibitions show how varied artistic voices can deepen public understanding of culture--and help shape the stories future generations inherit.
