This week, the New Museum in Nolita re-emerges after a two-year hiatus, showcasing its stunning $82 million expansion designed by OMA. The grand reopening, set for March 21, will introduce visitors to a dynamic new addition that features three site-specific commissions and an expansive exhibition titled New Humans: Memories of the Future, showcasing 732 artworks.
Board president James-Keith Brown heralded this moment as transformative, reflecting the museum's commitment to being both innovative and globally aware. "This building embodies our identity," he stated during a recent preview.
Despite some last-minute preparations, including visible masking tape and unfinished details, the artistic team is eager for the public to experience the new space. Artistic Director Massimiliano Gioni humorously acknowledged the ongoing work, emphasizing the creativity that often accompanies such projects.
The new wing, characterized by its light and airy design, seamlessly connects with the existing SANAA-designed structure. A notable component is Tschabalala Self's facade installation, "Art Lovers", which beautifully symbolizes the fusion of the two buildings.
Changes to the museum's layout include a newly designed atrium stairway that enhances the flow of natural light and air throughout the galleries. The coat check has been relocated to minimize congestion, and the gift shop has moved to a more spacious area at the back of the lobby.

The upper levels of the museum are envisioned as a "brain" of creativity, featuring a computer lab for NEW INC., a unique auditorium, and outdoor terraces offering breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline.
Director Lisa Phillips described the upper floors as playful and vibrant, a nod to the museum's commitment to fostering discovery and innovation. "It's a space for creation, filled with humor and color," she remarked.
