Natalie Portman stars in The Gallerist, a forthcoming satire set in the high-pressure art world. She plays an ambitious dealer preparing a major exhibition for Art Basel Miami Beach, where the pursuit of status and market success takes an increasingly outrageous turn.
The story features a sculpture called The Emasculator, created by an artist played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph. After an accident leaves a body impaled on the work, a critic interprets the scene as a pointed statement against patriarchy.
The ensemble cast includes Charli XCX as the girlfriend of an art influencer played by Zach Galifianakis, alongside Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sterling K. Brown. The film is scheduled for wide theatrical release on December 4.
By turning the art market's appetite for spectacle into comedy, The Gallerist may add a lively new perspective to how popular culture explores contemporary art and its commercial world.
