A new agreement aims to keep the global art fair in Miami Beach
Art Basel Miami Beach and the city have reached a new venue arrangement after the fair's organizers said they would reconsider their position if rental costs were not reduced. City commissioners voted 6-1 to advance a contract setting the convention center's annual rent at $500,000 when the agreement renews in December 2026.
The fair had been paying about $1 million a year to use the Miami Beach Convention Center. Additional credits for fire, police and emergency medical services bring the projected annual savings to approximately $650,000. The proposed contract also includes a 30-day period around the fair when other art fairs cannot rent the center, and gives Art Basel a say over certain events in nearby public spaces.
Since its Miami Beach debut in 2002, the fair has helped establish the city as an international art destination. It draws about 80,000 visitors annually and is estimated to generate $60 million in direct economic impact. The event is expected to host 250 exhibitors this December, compared with 283 the previous year.
The agreement may help sustain the fair's role in Miami Beach's cultural life, while illustrating how cities and major events can adapt their partnerships to support a lasting creative economy.
