Mothers Speaking a Second Language to Their Children Enhance Emotional Bonds

A recent study shows that mothers speaking a second language to their children maintain strong emotional bonds, emphasizing the benefits of bilingualism in parent-child interactions.

Mothers Speaking a Second Language to Their Children Enhance Emotional Bonds

Research indicates that neural synchrony, or the simultaneous activity of brain networks during social interactions, plays a crucial role in enhancing emotional connections and communication. A recent study reveals that mothers who engage with their bilingual toddlers in English as a second language are just as effective in fostering this vital brain attunement as those who speak their native language.

The concept of interbrain synchrony refers to the harmonious functioning of neural networks among individuals engaged in activities such as talking, learning, or playing. This synchronization is essential for strengthening emotional ties, improving communication, and aligning focus.

Scientists in the UK have discovered that neural synchrony remains intact even when mothers converse in a language they acquired later in life. This finding, published in a leading cognitive journal, highlights that optimal learning and bonding between mothers and children do not necessitate native language proficiency.

"Our research demonstrates that bilingual mothers and their children maintain a strong neural synchrony regardless of the language used during play," stated Dr. Efstratia Papoutselou, the study's lead author from the University of Nottingham's School of Medicine.

This is a significant revelation, suggesting that employing a second language does not hinder the brain-to-brain connection that is vital for bonding and effective communication.

Globally, many families are bilingual, with the percentage of such households in the EU rising from 8% to 15.6% between 2014 and 2023. The advantages of growing up in a multilingual environment are well-documented, encompassing social, cognitive, and academic benefits.

However, the researchers sought to understand whether multilingualism might complicate parent-child communication. This concern arises because even proficient speakers often navigate their acquired language more slowly, with pauses and corrections, especially in emotionally charged situations.

"Second-language speakers frequently report feeling emotionally distanced when using their non-native language, which can affect their ability to express affection or empathy during interactions with their children," the authors noted.

Exploring Neural Connections

The study focused on 15 bilingual families in the UK, where children aged three to four were raised in a multilingual context. The mothers spoke English at a high proficiency level (C1 or C2) but it was not their first language.

During the study, mother-child pairs participated in interactive play sessions while wearing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) caps to monitor changes in brain activity. They engaged in play scenarios in either the mother's native language, exclusively in English, or silently with a screen between them.

Results indicated that neural synchrony was significantly stronger during interactive play compared to independent play, particularly in the prefrontal cortex, which is associated with emotions and decision-making.

Unified Minds

The findings showed that brain synchrony remained robust whether the participants played in English or the mother's native language. This suggests that using a second language does not impede the mother's ability to synchronize brain activity with her child during interactive play.

"Bilingualism is often viewed as a challenge, yet it can provide substantial benefits. Our study indicates that growing up with multiple languages can also foster healthy communication and learning," concluded Dr. Douglas Hartley, the study's senior author.
