Mobileye, the Intel-backed autonomous driving company, is preparing to step into a new role in the mobility market. The company announced plans to launch a robotaxi service in a U.S. city in 2027, moving beyond its long-standing position as a technology supplier.
The first phase will begin with a fleet of 100 autonomous vehicles, introduced gradually during 2027. If the service gains traction, Mobileye expects to expand the fleet to around 17,000 robotaxis over the next five years.
Founder and CEO Amnon Shashua said the robotaxi sector is still in its early stage and sees strong potential to reshape urban transportation. Mobileye has already built a major presence in the industry by supplying computer vision chips and driver-assistance systems to automakers worldwide.
Over time, the company also developed self-driving software and tested it in multiple cities. Today, its autonomous driving system is used by Volkswagen and MOIA, while its mobility app Moovit will support the consumer side of the new service.
Mobileye says the robotaxi project will operate as a separate business unit and will complement, not replace, its existing partnerships. The company has not yet named the city or vehicle model, but it plans to work with AV-ready platform manufacturers.
By combining fleet operations, software, and mobility services, Mobileye is positioning itself for a broader role in autonomous transport. The move could help define how self-driving systems evolve from enabling technology into everyday urban mobility infrastructure.
