MCA Chicago Receives $5 Million Endowment to Advance Women Artists

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has received a $5 million endowment from the Bluhm family to strengthen its long-term support for women artists. The gift will sustain the museum's Women Artists Initiative, now renamed the Madeleine Fund for Women Artists in recognition of outgoing director Madeleine Grynsztejn, who launched the program in 2015.

The fund is designed to support gender equity across the museum's exhibitions, commissions and permanent collection. It can help close remaining budget gaps for projects by women artists, covering needs such as exhibition production, installations, shipping, insurance and publication costs.

A decade of measurable progress

Since its creation, the initiative has helped MCA Chicago expand representation across its program. Between 2020 and 2025, 54 percent of the museum's solo exhibitions featured women-identifying artists, while women-identifying artists accounted for 50 percent of annual acquisitions during the same period.

Over the past decade, the initiative has supported presentations by artists including Faith Ringgold, Nicole Eisenman, Firelei Báez and Yoko Ono. The new endowment gives the program a permanent financial foundation, enabling the museum to plan future projects with greater confidence and continuity.

The Bluhm family's contribution is part of MCA Chicago's wider campaign to reinforce its long-term cultural impact. By embedding support for women artists into its financial structure, the institution aims to make broad representation a lasting part of its curatorial practice.

This endowment signals how cultural institutions can shape a more inclusive art history by pairing ambitious programming with enduring resources.
