Marilyn Minter, a prominent figure in the art world known for her unique fusion of painting and photography with a feminist perspective, has been awarded the prestigious International Artist Award by the Anderson Ranch Arts Center. The award ceremony will take place during the annual Ranch Gala, which is part of the Ranch's celebrated Ranch Week series in July.
Peter Waanders, President and CEO of Anderson Ranch, shared insights with ARTnews regarding Minter's selection, highlighting her exceptional craftsmanship, dedicated studio practice, and her long-standing commitment to education as a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts in New York. "She embodies the spirit of creation and is deeply focused on her work. We are also thrilled to recognize her extensive career as an educator," he noted.
In a recent conversation, Minter expressed her appreciation for the Ranch's residency programs and scholarships, emphasizing the importance of idea exchange and collaboration across various disciplines. "It's all about ideas, cross-pollination, and access to different perspectives," she remarked.
Minter marks the 28th recipient of this accolade, which has been presented annually since 1997. Notable past honorees include Charles Gaines, Christian Marclay, Simone Leigh, and Theaster Gates.
As part of Ranch Week, Anderson Ranch will showcase a screening of Pretty Dirty, a documentary that explores Minter's artistic journey, followed by a live discussion featuring Minter and New Museum director Lisa Phillips. The summer series will also include conversations with other distinguished artists such as Leonardo Drew, Robert Lugo, Aliza Nisenbaum, and Alicja Kwade.
