Rising American painter Lucy Bull has joined the international gallery Hauser & Wirth, while continuing her long-standing representation with David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles and New York.
Known for richly layered abstract paintings, Bull creates luminous compositions that can evoke imagined organisms, shifting landscapes and immersive spaces. Her process combines techniques such as frottage and automatic mark-making, building each work gradually over extended periods.
A practice shaped by scale and experimentation
Bull's approach often reaches architectural dimensions. For her 2024 presentation at the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, she created a 39-foot painting that unfolded across several floors, demonstrating how her work can transform the experience of a space.
Alongside her studio practice, the artist leads From the Desk of Lucy Bull, an itinerant exhibition initiative that has brought together creative projects in Los Angeles and New York. The platform reflects her interest in exchange, experimentation and artist-led cultural programming.
Growing global visibility
Bull's work has attracted increasing attention in the contemporary art market. Her auction record reached $2.4 million in 2024, while another painting achieved $1.55 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong in 2025, surpassing its estimate by more than three times.
Hauser & Wirth will introduce a new Bull painting at Art Basel Paris next month, followed by a solo exhibition in Zurich in June 2027, timed with Art Basel's flagship Swiss edition. The presentations mark an important new phase in the artist's international trajectory.
As major galleries invest in distinctive younger voices, Bull's expanding platform could help bring process-driven abstraction to broader audiences and encourage new forms of engagement with contemporary painting.
