Louvre Reaches Union Agreement, Paving the Way for Museum Improvements

The Louvre has reached an agreement with unions, easing the threat of further strikes after months of staff concerns over working conditions, staffing levels and the museum's renovation plans.

Under the deal, the Paris museum plans to add 50 security staff in 2027, with around 100 new hires expected by 2028. Some employees, including security personnel, will also receive a monthly pay increase of €50.

The agreement comes as the Louvre prepares a major renovation expected to cost more than $1 billion. Plans include security upgrades, preservation work on the historic building and a separate entrance and gallery for the Mona Lisa. Union representatives have sought a role in discussions about the construction schedule and priorities.

The agreement marks a step toward addressing staff concerns while the museum advances its renewal plans. How the Louvre combines improved working conditions with long-term investment may offer a model for sustaining major cultural institutions.
