For enthusiasts of role-playing games (RPGs), the thrill of character creation and embarking on grand adventures is unmatched. Now, imagine an AI-driven, text-based RPG that offers completely unscripted interactions with non-player characters (NPCs).
Latitude, the innovative startup recognized for its immersive text adventure games that feature limitless storylines powered by AI, has just introduced a groundbreaking platform named Voyage. This new tool empowers users to embrace the role of game designers.
Voyage allows players to craft their own gaming universes with AI assistance. Users can detail their environments, including regions, cities, notable landmarks, primary quests, and antagonists. They can also shape game mechanics, such as character abilities, leveling systems, and combat scenarios.
For instance, if a player envisions a fishing village troubled by a sea monster, the AI swiftly generates the necessary code to manifest that concept. Players can further refine their worlds before sharing them with others.
The platform promises a diverse range of experiences, from lighthearted adventures to intense quests. Being text-based, players engage with the narrative (with audio narration options) and dictate their characters' actions. Unlike conventional RPGs, players can opt for unconventional choices, such as becoming a goblin therapist during an attack, showcasing the platform's creative freedom.
As players input their desired actions, the AI narrates the results, including NPC responses. The lack of a fixed script allows for unexpected interactions, often leading to amusing and quirky dialogues. For example, during testing, a troll began discussing his marital issues after capturing a character.
Character development mirrors the unpredictability of tabletop gaming, relying on skill and chance. Players can unlock unique abilities by defeating bosses or completing quests, with several abilities inspired by classic Dungeons & Dragons spells.
If players encounter challenges, a chatbot is available to suggest actions or skip to different narrative sections.
At the heart of Voyage lies Latitude's World Engine, a sophisticated system that took five years to develop. This engine employs multiple AI technologies to narrate actions, manage gameplay, and retain character backstories, ensuring a cohesive gaming experience. Instead of generic NPCs, players meet characters who remember past interactions, creating a more immersive environment.
"Characters aren't just reactions to you but have their own personality backstories, reacting in ways that feel authentic," said Latitude CEO Nick Walton.
Latitude gained recognition in AI gaming with the launch of AI Dungeon in 2019, captivating millions. Walton noted, "It established the potential of interactive generative AI, and Voyage amplifies that concept significantly, transforming it into a fully realized world."
Currently in expanded beta testing, Voyage is set for an open beta later this year, with testers engaging with over 160,000 unique AI-generated characters. Players have made nearly 3,000 choices on average.
Additionally, Latitude has partnered with Google's AI Futures Fund, integrating its models with technologies like Google's Gemini Flash for image generation. Voyage will soon offer subscription plans for enhanced features, while ensuring safety measures are in place for all players.
This innovative platform is poised to redefine the RPG landscape, paving the way for richer, more personalized gaming experiences in the future.
